August - the Dog Days!
Where does the term Dog Days come from anyway? Here's what Wikipedia say about it - "Dog Days" are the hottest, most sultry days of summer. In the northern hemisphere, they usually fall between early July and early September. In the southern hemisphere they are usually between January and early March. The actual dates vary greatly from region to region, depending on latitude and climate. Dog Days can also define a time period or event that is very hot or stagnant, or marked by dull lack of progress. The name comes from the ancient belief that Sirius, also called the Dog Star, was somehow responsible for the hot weather.
This month I've included an article about my own childhood canine companion who I recently said "good bye" to. It was a difficult experience to write about but I am happy to have a chance to tell you what a wonderful friend and part of our family he was.
I hope you also enjoy our August Blue Dog of the Month and recent photos of our Blue Dog Bakery team out and about sharing tasty, natural treats with lucky dogs all around Seattle!
Give those dogs a big hug from me. Lara

Saying Goodbye by Lara Thompson-Kravik
Earlier this week, a co-worker sent me an article written by a man faced with the heart-breaking decision of whether or not to put his cat to sleep. A topic close to my own heart, as my childhood companion had passed the 14-year mark and was what my mother called "geriatric." I have received emails here and there from you, letting me know your faithful companions have gone to the Rainbow Bridge. It is with teary-eyes and sadness, that I am now, more so than ever, empathetic of your loss.
Kiska was a purebred Siberian Husky with a ceramic red coat and white belly. His eyes, true to the Husky-gene, were different colors - one piercing blue, and the other brown. My Dad spoiled him his entire life, resulting in waves of pudginess that we rarely spoke of in front of him - as not to offend. Also known as Kissy, Boo and sometimes KissyBoo, he was never referred to as "the dog," always by his first name. He was truly our fourth family member....sixth if you count the cats. Kiska was vocal, stubborn, could never be left out and to be honest, was kind of an attention mongrel.
Every road trip, excursion or outing required sharing the front seat of our truck with Kissy. He preferred the truck to a kennel - because he knew it meant more time with Dad. He shed constantly, and in the summer heavily, making black a poor fashion decision and a once-roomy drive cramped. He knew he was second in command, and my Dad would likely side with him when it came to space requirements.
Kiska had become arthritic and was steadily losing weight. Still, my Dad had taken to sleeping next to him, soothing him and making sure he was comfortable. It was a difficult digression for everyone, but especially for Dad, who really had found his canine-soul mate. Compared to Dad, everyone else was chopped liver. Momentarily entertaining but just not quite as good. You could see the admiration in his eyes every time Dad came within his sight. It was a feeling that was more than reciprocated. So, as tears filled my eyes Wednesday evening they were just as much for Dad, as they were for our Kiska. He will be missed everyday - as there will never be another Kiska like the one we are saying goodbye to. The following excerpt from a Rainbow Bridge Poem seems appropriate:
"You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart." - Author Unknown
Goodbye, Kissyboo. You will always be in our hearts.
